Giving: not because you have to but because you can

As I sit here in the crazy rush of what is called morning, I have to take a minute and remember there's a bigger picture outside of my 4 walled padded room. This is the begining of a new year, a new adventure in time and space and new challenges. However the drive to acheive has to be tempered with the reality that I've got it pretty good. With that in mind it's time to give back. ...and damn it's cold outside.

On Jan 3, 2018 The Candle Wick Shoppe partnered with Howes Bayou to provide dinner for  the homeless at Renaissance Vineyard Church in Ferndale. Efforts inspired by Jim Poole and his family have inspired members of the greater Ferndale community to come together and perform acts of kindness. Every year Renaissance Vineyard Church participates in a warming center for the homeless. The church brings aproximatly 100 people in out of the blistering cold and provides them with a meal and a warm place to sleep. They are not the only ones to host. Six to eight locations start in mid December and host for as long as they have venues. This year may extend into late February.  When Renaissance Vineyard's rotation is done the next site to open is St Mary's of Royal Oak. Each location is always looking for assistance.

I have to give it to the crew at Howes Bayou. Working as a well oiled machine, they took it as a personal mission to provide the best for people in need. The Howes' staff as well as everybody at the Candle Wick SHoppe would like to thank Jim and Megan Pool and Renaissance Vineyard Church for allowing us to participate in helping those less fortunate.

These are the times where we need to come together with positive acts that build up our community.  We are stronger together. Contact the church to see how you can assist.

The Candle Wick Shoppe celebrates 10th anniversary in 2018

Ferndale, MI - The Candle Wick Shoppe is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2018. What began as a cute hippie basement store for testing new products has become a place for experiences. Despite the name, the Candle Wick Shoppe is much more than a candle store.

jacki n patty small“Becoming a destination store is really what drives us.  Inspiring customers to come to us for an extraordinary experience is our goal.”  Jacki Smith

In 2008, when the previous Candle Wick Shoppe owner decided to sell, Jacki Smith, Patty Shaw and Anthony Phoenix jumped at the chance to have a retail store again. Moving to the bigger 1200 square foot space on the ground level in 2015 gave this team a chance to express their creativity through the space renovations. The ground-level store also created an opportunity to open the Reiki Healing Center, inside of the Candle Wick Shoppe, where  Reiki Healers, Spiritual Counselors and Tarot Readers assist customers in healing, support, and life direction.

“Providing a place to relax, heal and grow is very important to us and is part of our identity.”  Patty Shaw

Being a part of the Downtown Ferndale community is what makes it all come together. For the most part, the people in Downtown Ferndale work and live in Ferndale. Many of the businesses are owner operated, which has created a sense of comradery. This connection to community inspired Smith and Phoenix to move their family to Ferndale in 2009.   Ferndale was not a new business destination to Smith and Shaw, sisters who own Coventry Creations, a 25 year old candle making company that has been in Ferndale since 2004.  These sisters saw Candle Wick Shoppe as the perfect retail outlet for their inspirational brand of candles.

"Inspiration stirred the creation of the Mojo Bar, located inside the shop, a great place to experience creating a personal talisman with the help of the gifted staff." JS

During the 10 years, the owners have found ways to collaborate with and give back to the Ferndale community. From cross promotions with other local businesses, to gallery showings to meet and greets with local area politicians, the Candle Wick Shoppe is dedicated to all of Ferndale.

Involvement with nonprofit organizations has been important, too. Examples include being on the board of Ferndale Pride, donating to the Michigan Pagan Scholarship fund and the Magical Educational Council (MEC). They are also a strong supporter of Ferndale schools and the Ferndale Library, Ferndale Youth Assistance, and Renaissance Vineyard Church.

Those at the Candle Wick Shoppe daily hear that they are more than a candle store. The mission is “to have the remedy for what ails your soul.”  Besides offering Coventry Creations products, when they look to the future it is all about experiences. The core values are to create extraordinary experiences, have joyful interactions, make sure all efforts are rewarded and to exude authentic purpose.

The Candle Wick Shoppe in friendly Ferndale was established in 2008, and specializes in products for your soul, home and life. They offer a large range of incense, candles, statuary and spiritual supplies for the conscious consumer. 175 W 9 Mile Rd. Ferndale, MI 48220
